Tata Nexon Overview

Tata Motors has launched some cars in the past couple of years that have made everyone sit up and take notice. The Tiago, Tigor and Hexa are impressive products and the Nexon that we have here today is the 4th offering from Tata, that follows the IMPACT design philosophy. The Nexon is slotted in the compact SUV segment, rivalling the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport. So without wasting time, let’s go and have a look at what the Nexon offers.

The Tata Nexon was first showcased as a concept at the 2014 Auto Expo. It garnered a lot of attention from people and the company then went on to showcase the production version of the car at the 2016 Auto Expo and later at the Geneva Motor Show. Tata Nexon Exteriors

Tata Nexon is the first ever compact SUV by the Tata Motor’s and that makes it the most important in its model line-up. The new Nexon is built on the Tata’s X1 platform that was earlier seen to form the base of Bolt, Vista, and Zest. The front façade gets wide radiator grille along with chrome and muscular arches giving the car a wider look. Rich coat of silver on the higher part of the body will definitely catch the attention. Other elements that improve its bold looks are high-set fog lamps, projector headlamps along with LED DRLs, flared wheel arches and large air intake.

Tata Nexon seems SUV-ish from the front while its rear part looks like a hatchback. Bumper at the back and faux skid plate add to its ruggedness. Glossy black and off-white elements around the tail-lamps supplements quirkiness to the looks but with the time one gets used to it. Tata has worked a lot on the car, rather than providing it with conventional squared-off SUV looks. It has been mixed with elements like heavily ranked windshield at the front, sloping coupe-like roofline and short bonnet along with many quirky touches. All these traits make the car stand out among others.

Tata Nexon Interiors

Tata Motor’s new Nexon has an inviting inner cabin that feels and looks modern with dark grey plastic and beige theme. Various other elements such as plush upholstery as well as knitted roofline make appearance premium. Tata Nexon borrows the same simple dials from Tigor but one thing that stands out and catches the attention is the floating 6.5-inch touchscreen unit placed atop the dashboard that is crisp and easily readable. The infotainment is paired to 8-speaker Harman surround sound system while there is support for Android Auto and Bluetooth as well.

Smart dash is not drastic in terms of design, it is built with high-grade plastic of various textures providing it a great effect. The center console also houses AC vents and automatic climate control knobs besides giving room for USB and Aux-In. Another talking point of the car is the state-of-the-art twin-pod instrument cluster with an LCD screen at the center. The car also comes with another standout feature in the form of three driving modes; Eco, City, and Sport meant to offer better drivability on and off-road.

Tata Nexon driving experience is quite nice, seats are large and very comfortable, and the seating angle is such that it sets into comfort mode automatically. The 12-way adjustable driving position with memory settings makes it easy for various drivers to keep their preferred settings on the go. The steering wheel is carried over from Zest which is nice to hold with a small diameter and of course, it’s multi-functional. Tata Nexon is the only car in the sub-4m SUV that comes with rear air vents. Other features included in the long list of gadgetry are engine start-stop button, reverse parking sensors, and keyless entry.

Tata Nexon Engine

There is no strong petrol engine on offer that is powerful yet fuel-efficient. The Nexon fills that gap. It is more powerful than the Honda WR-V, at the same time it has good efficiency too. The Ecosport Ecoboost is an expensive engine with good performance but not so good mileage. The 1.5-litre petrol on the Ecosport isn’t that punchy and lacks good mileage too. This is one of the most sorted out petrol engines, and the price it has come at, makes us change our verdict too. The diesel engine on offer is the most powerful option. This new engine gets 108bhp of power and 260Nm of maximum torque. This makes it more powerful than the Brezza, Creta 1.4, Honda WR-V and the Ford Ecosport. What’s more, it even gets six-speed manual transmisison. Both the diesel and petrol engines are engineered to deliver better fuel economy. Where diesel variant offers ARAI certified mileage figures of 21.5kmpl, the petrol variant, on the other hand, returns 17.0kmpl of mileage.

Tata Nexon Driving

The Tata Nexon comes with a dual path suspension and we must mention that it has been tuned very nicely. The suspension attacks potholes and bad roads with ease, without causing discomfort to passengers. The car remains pretty much stable even while going on broken patches at slightly higher speeds. The 16-inch tyres also have good grip levels. The steering is light at low speeds and weighs up nicely on the highways. It has decent feedback on offer and is pretty direct. Body roll isn’t much and I actually found the Nexon to be fun to drive. Braking power is good and ABS is standard across all variants.

Tata Nexon Safety

Tata Motor’s Nexon comes equipped with omnipresent front disc and rear drum braking hardware. The brakes come fitted with ABS with EBD. Dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat and ABS are standard across the range. Other safety aspects include Central Locking, Engine immobilizer and power door lock.

Tata Nexon On Road Price is 7,63,798/- and Ex-showroom Price is 6,48,093/- in Hyderabad. Tata Nexon comes in 5 colours, namely Vermont Red,Moroccan Blue,Glasgow Grey,Calgary White,Seattle Silver. Tata Nexon comes with FWD with 1198 CC Displacement and 3 Cylinders with Maximum Power 108 bhp@5000 rpm and Peak Torque 170 Nm@1750-4000 rpm DRIVE TRAIN FWD and reaches 100 KMPH at N/A . Tata Nexon Conclusion

The Tata Nexon has impressed us and it now remains to be seen at what price does the automaker launch the car. The compact SUV comes across as a good looking product that is spacious, practical, comfortable, good to drive and feature loaded. It competes in the tough compact SUV segment, rivalling the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport. After driving this car, we think it does have a lot than can give sleepless just nights to its rivals.

Tata Nexon is available in five different trims. The engine option on Nexon includes 1.2L turbocharged petrol mill that can produce the power output of 110PS and yields the peak torque of 170Nm. The 1.5L diesel oil burner can generate the output of 110PS and torque of 260Nm. Both the engines come mated to six speed manual transmission. Tata claims Nexon petrol version can deliver 17kmpl while the diesel one can return 21kmpl which is satisfactory given the dynamics of the vehicle.

Talking about the price, Tata Nexon base variant gets the price tag of Rs. 5.99 lakh while the top end variant goes up to Rs. 9.62 lakh. Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport are its two major rivals with Mahindra KUV100 and Mahindra NuvoSport also competing in the space.
